Our work speaks for itself
From Sloped & Soggy to Smart & Structured
This Tempe landscaping project started out as a steep, muddy slope — an awkward and underutilised space that didn’t offer much in the way of function or enjoyment. The brief was to turn it into a usable, family-friendly garden with structure, flow and plenty of green space.
Terracing With Recycled Railway Sleepers
To bring shape and usability to the site, we created three distinct lawn terraces using recycled railway sleepers. These hardwood timbers are not only strong and durable, but they also bring a rustic charm that feels right at home in the Inner West.
Each level was carefully retained and supported with the sleepers, allowing us to transform the steep slope into flat, accessible lawn areas. Over 18 cubic metres of soil were brought in and compacted to form stable, level platforms — turning what was once a difficult gradient into a practical, tiered garden.
Lush Lawns That Tie It All Together
With the levels formed and the soil prepped, we laid Sir Walter buffalo turf across all three terraces. This variety was chosen for its ability to thrive in Sydney’s conditions, offering a soft, evergreen lawn that’s tough enough to handle foot traffic and easy to maintain. The rich green of the new turf immediately lifted the space, tying all three levels together visually and creating a cohesive, usable garden.
Finishing With Practical Paving
To complete the transformation, we paved the rear passageway using 400mm x 400mm concrete pavers. This helped define the access path and provided a clean, durable surface that connects the garden to the rest of the property. The pavers offer both practicality and a modern finish that contrasts nicely with the natural textures of the lawn and timber.
A Big Change for a Small Backyard
This Tempe gardening project is a great example of how thoughtful landscape construction can completely change the way a backyard feels and functions — even when space and slope are working against you. What began as a muddy incline is now a well-structured garden that’s easy to enjoy, maintain and grow into.
